Cynthia McKean - Untitled
BackCynthia McKean - Untitled video:
A short video profile of an artist, Cynthia McKean, who resides in Saugatuck, Michigan. For information about McKean and her art work, log on to http://www.cynthiamckean.com. This documentary-like-video is comprised of her interview and the consecutive video and photographic images of her sculptures. It also shows her creating art pieces in her studio. The filmmaker, Tim Nagae, did not intend to produce a biographic documentary about McKean. Instead, he created a promotional video of her sculptures by placing her art in his own art. He shot these sculptures (in her yard in Saugatuck) in various different compositions where he particularly emphasized the primary colors of the objects (her style of using colors for her art). He took advantage of video, which generally gives high-contrasted, poppy looking color images to focus the colors and simple geometrical lines of her arts. The video starts with the montage video and photo images of her arts and sceneries of the west where she grew up with orthodox dissolve transitions with a slow music piece. Then it shows her working in her studio in a dark-limited-light-situation where she cuts and welds to create her arts. After the long montage of photo images of her creations with the same slow music, it shows a jerky-home-movie-looking super 8 images of one of her art, Untitled with the sound of a film projector as if it was projected on a wall. Then McKean and the interviewer (Nagae himself) have a conversation about this sculpture. This sequence looks like they were watching this super 8 film together and discussing this art piece. Watching home movies in family gatherings used to be traditional events at many homes, and Nagae created one type of our view to observe and examine her art work by showing her art in this way. For the part where McKean explains the negative and positive spaces, some colored images and a number of different shots of Untitled appear and follow her explanation. Here, Nagae boldly used many shots of detailed parts of the sculpture in dynamic close-ups by emphasizing the geometrical lines and shapes of this piece and edited these shots quickly and rhythmically to represent the strength of her art. Nagae admits he is not sure if this video is an accurate and appropriate interpretation to present her art, but he says, This is how I look at Cynthias art. The theme music, Sweet Dream World was composed, performed and recorded by Laurence Miller, a musician/performer in Ann Arbor, Michigan. The other music piece, Untitled was composed by Tim Nagae himself and performed by Nagae and Miller. The scenery photos including the panoramic image of the mountains and field were shot and provided by Jacob Rosenberg, who is a nephew of McKean. And the film images of the western sceneries are from a PBS documentary, That Awesome Space, which was shot by Clayton Rye, who is Nagaes mentor film instructor.
