Simchat Torah "Rejoicing with Torah," is a celebration marking the conclusion of the annual cycle of public Torah readings, and the beginning of a new cycle. http://www.Myzeidimusic.com Simchat Torah is a component of the Biblical Jewish holiday of Shemini Atzeret, which follows immediately after the festival of Sukkot in the month of Tishrei. SUKKOT The word Sukkot is the plural of the Hebrew word sukkah, meaning booth or hut. During this holiday, Jews are instructed to build a temporary structure called a sukkah, in which they eat their meals, entertain guests, relax, and even sleep. The decor of the interior of the sukkah may range from totally unornamented to lavishly decorated with pictures, tapestries, hanging fruits and ornaments. Families may also line the interior walls with white sheeting, in order to recall the "Clouds of Glory" that surrounded the Jewish nation during their 40-year sojourn in the desert after the Exodus from Egypt. The sukkah itself is a reminder of these Clouds of Glory, as well as of God's benevolence in providing for all the Jews' needs in the desert. In the 20th century, Simchat Torah came to symbolize the public assertion of Jewish identity. The Jews of the Soviet Union, in particular, would celebrate the festival en masse in the streets of Moscow. On October 14, 1973, more than 100,000 Jews took part in a Simchat Torah rally on behalf of refusniks and Soviet Jewry. Dancing in the street with the Torah become part the holiday's ritual in various Jewish congregations... Moses gave us the Torah.
