Lots of misinformation on the 936 here. I have several books on Le Mans and the late '70s 936s had about 540-580 HP and reached up to 220+ mph on the Mulsanne. The heavier roadcar based 935s could make 750-850 HP and threaten 230 mph, although they couldn't lap as fast as the best 936s. Still, damn impressive that they could outrun the 936s! By '81, the last of the 936s had up to 640 HP and could reach 235 mph, amazing! My favorite era of Le Mans is '76 to '91, era of the Turbo Gods!!!

To be fair, the cars that took off in the late '80s did so because of total tire failures. Punctures were and still are the ultimate nightmare of a Le Mans driver, but at those speeds, a puncture which leads to tire failure is even more frightening. Just ask Win Percy and Klaus Niedwiedz.

I thought the 936 was an open car?

They also brought in a rule that meant any FIA sanctioned event, the straight couldn't be more than something like 1.4 km long, not sure exactly how long it is though.

More 2003 or earlier, with the v10s producing 1000+ hp. That said though, an open wheel car produces a lot more drag then a closed car like this, so they might be surprisingly equal past 180 mph or so.

I remember seeing somewhere that a guy (in the sixties I think) took a powerful mercedes saloon car and basically invaded the race. He kept going until he ran out of fuel when he was then arrested. Does anyone know anything more about this?

There was a number of cars that "took off" when doing 400+ kmh. The chicanes was added mostly for spectator safety. They did not want a car to land in the crowds like in 1955.

Thanks. Not really a "straight" anymore I guess. It seems to me the FIA likes to make races slower.
