The moviemakers did their homework and thorough historical research of Roman history prior to the empire. Sempronius Gracchus actually died well before Caesar was born. His character was recreated and is a composite of Gracchus and Cicero who was Caesar's contemporary and a master orator. Gracchus' comment "stealing 2/3 of the world from its rightful owners" recaptures the later animus among Roman citizens of Caesar's conquest of Gaul which was unpopular and considered unjust.

Two of Britains best actors at their finest. Each trying to outdo the other in stealing the scene ! As a lifelong Laughton fan I'm afraid Ustinov lost, but only just!

I love every scene in this film with the fantastic Ustinov. "Brilliant dagger thrust, uh, difficult angle" LoL

I have read many of Ustinov`s books. He liked Laughton.
