greece never lost its culture and identity. It was part of the Turkish/ottoman empire for many centuries after Rome, but it was a part of it not fully assimilated. There is a lot of mixing of genetics and ethnicity from Roman and Turkish days, but a fair percentage of the people can still be traced back to the classical age Greeks.

As with the video on Socrates, the Encyclopedia channel makes numerous errors. It is likely only a later apocyphal story that his name was originaly Aristocles. Certainly that was his grandfathers name, but there are numerous references to Plato as a proper name at that time. Nothing to seriously suggest the tenous idea that it was a nickname due to his wide shoulders.

Put down thy Aristotle and pick up thy Plato.

*Basspliff187* Hey Spliff burner :) To be honest I find it hard to believe that anyone with a knowlege and understanding of Plato would so fastly jump to such conclusions based on what he wrote. The fact that the first thought that came into your head was to classify him by colour/race speaks for its self. Fair enough he didnt need to leave the comment he did an should have heard of Plato but your comment was by far worse. ...And even Socrates couldn't prove other wise :) Peace.

Whatever you think, with out Plato noone would remember Socrates. Saying that, if there was no Socrates there would be no Plato to keep a record of what he did. Peace
