also oksana was virtually an orphan the father was gone for most of her life, her mom and grandmother died soon after each other, and she dedicated this performance to her mom

totally agree...it had nothing to do with altering her program slightly at the end...there's a Skate America posing on youtube now of her retrying a 3Salchow w/this program

She cried because she was relieved, because she couldn't believe she had done it... skated so well and won the Olympic Gold. Going into tonight's Long Program, she was in pain from the collision she had with Tanja Szewczenko during practice the day before. Before receiving pain medication injections, she wasn't able to skate and was starting to believe that her Olympic dream was over as she thought she would have to withdraw.

Why she cried? Because she was in pain, and because she had to change her choreography and all the pressure fell off. My guess.

Why is she crying so much...

Imagine if she'd been able to go first time ... those flower girls may have changed the final result! A bit out there but interesting nonetheless!

Baiul is probably the luckiest woman in figure skating, to win the world title in her first season on the senior level, then Olympic Gold. Off ice her life was truly cursed, however. The gold medal could have gone to her or Nancy, it was a tough call. Oksana was more whimisical, albeit not as strong technically (it is an outrage she did not have a proper combination). And I do favor the skaters known as athletes/jumpers. On that note Sarah Hughes at the 2002 Games remains the benchmark.

It's a medley of show tunes.

awful gold medal winning performance. The music did not meet the moment. The mistakes as well would not cut it today. The performances in 1998 and beyond were more in line of what I think a gold medal winning performance is.
