WOW, thats great information thank you. You know a lot about horse racing, i'v just gotten into march 2008, but I'm getting better. Do you have personal experience? And it's interesting that boundary peaked well at age 4. I think he would have done well at four, but the poor horse always gets hoof injuries.

Big Brown handled the surface fine to me, 1:48 and 1/5 for 9F at Monmouth is GREAT time. The surface wasn't playing particularly fast either. Big Brown didn't need to run a world class race to win this, he did just enough to win. But I do agree the BB from the Florida Derby, Kentucky Derby or Preakness would've won this easily. Would've liked to see BB run at 4yo because his sire Boundary didn't peak until around that age and BB would've been a lot better as a mature 4yo.

I don't think he likes the Monmouth track. It looked like he struggled on this surface a little bit. He did do it impressively though. I like how he went in the Monmouth stakes though. He might of liked the surface at Santa Anita. But when Kent asked BB to go he did go Coal Play just took of a little more which made it difficult for BB to catch him. Great race

Coal Play, no doubt, ran a great race. But I don't think it was that as much as after Big Brown was beaten in the Belmont, he was never the same horse after that. He struggled mightily to catch Coal Play in the stretch in this race but would easily have beaten Coal Play if he ran like he did in the Ky. Derby and Preakness. There was talk after this race of B.B. going on to the Woodward or the B.C. Classic that year to face Curlin. Running as he did here, Curlin would have beaten B.B. easily. imo

I agree with Brian that Coal Play ran the race of his life. The fractions and his determination still had him racing through the very end. I will say though that BB was never the same horse after the Belmont. Nonetheless, a good performance by him.

i always thought big brown was great in this race, i remember some ppl complaining saying it was unimpressive. i think this was a great performance. coal play ran his heart out too

I think I have to agree.

NYGdevils- it doesnt matter about race time... its all about the pace. BB was a chaser who would open up down the stretch. RA was a pace setter who would lead post to post as long as no one caught up. BB did that once and only because competition was terrible (his maiden race). Otherwise he always closed... and dominated. RA is also an amazing horse, but BB ran this better, and not to mention flawlessly.

That's true, but you can't really compare the surfaces. Slop at monmouth park tends to quicken the track even more than dry fast dirt. So 09's Haskell was probably run on a faster furface than 08's. It's very typical for monmouth to produce quicker times when the track is sloppy rather than dry fast.

Rachel Alexandra beat Big Brown's time by a second and she was running in the slop with bettter competition

i understand that, but im saying how inaccurate beyers are sometimes. comparing big brown's beyer of 107 to any given saturdays beyer of 113 when the final time was about the same tells me that beyer is saying big brown had to win his haskel by 6 more lengths just to tie saturdays beyer. meaning big brown had to run the haskel in 1:47 flat and win by 7 and 3/4 lengths just to tie. it makes no sense, just like smarty jone's overrated beyer of 119 and browns underrated beyer of 100 in preakness.

Beyers are not only based on the final time. It wouldn't have sense. There are also determined by things like the track conditions, wind, etc.
