During the war in the US. Civilian use of gasoline was very limited. Rationing was the rule and once you used your weekly ration of gas, you were out until the next week. They had ration stickers that were to be displayed on the windshield of your car. There were four classes A,B,C,D. A cards got the least gallons per week. The plane had an A card on the window and ran out of gas. Rationing did not apply to the military, it was a joke.

@MusicloverQueen A "4F" was what you got if there was a medical condition of some kind that kept you out of the Army. Jimmy Stewart was a 4F (I think, due to a punctured eardrum) but signed up anyway and saw some action.
